Many people have started working from home this year. It is an adjustment to work from home and important that the space stays tidy. Here are 5 tips to organize your home office.
Only Keep What You Need on Your Desk
The first rule to organize your home office is to not let your desk become cluttered up with things you don’t use often. Only keep the things you need and use every day at your desk.
This might only be your computer or monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Depending on your line of work, there may be other items that you use regularly and need to be on your desk. Rarely used items should be stored elsewhere.
Create a Command Center to Organize Your Home Office
The command center is a centralized area where you might keep things like a large wall calendar, printer, paper shredder, and stapler. Designate a corner or wall for the command center and be deliberate about how you use the space.
File Documents Electronically
Papers and documents easily clutter up an office. In some cases, it’s better to file documents electronically instead of keeping the actual copy. They will take up space on your hard drive, but none in your office. Shred important documents instead of just tossing them in the recycling bin in case they contain confidential information.
Install Shelves and Drawers to Organize Your Home Office
Every home office needs good storage solutions to stay organized. Install shelves or cabinets on the walls, and have some sets of drawers to keep things like printer ink, pens, electrical cables, and batteries. If you don’t have enough places to store your stuff, it will turn into clutter.
Don’t Let Areas Collect Clutter
Take a moment at the end of each day to put things back where they belong. Don’t leave pens and office supplies all over your desk. Electronically file and shred incoming documents. Remove post-it notes that are reminders of completed tasks or even better, use virtual sticky notes on your computer’s desktop. With dedication and a routine, your home office will stay tidy and clean.
