Spring is almost here, which means that many homeowners are cleaning up around the house to prepare for a spring filled with fresh air and time outdoors. When you start the spring cleaning process, it’s easy to focus on projects like sweeping and mopping your kitchen floor. However, there are many other places that you might forget about addressing. Here are some of the most common missed spots when tidying up.

Wash Your Windows During Spring Cleaning

After winter, it’s a great idea to give your windows a good cleaning. When spring cleaning, head outside to clean the exterior of each window and glass door at your home.

During this process, check your windows for any problems you need to address, like cracked or missing caulk, ripped screens, or other damage. By making repairs during early spring, your windows will be sealed up tight and ready for rain in the months ahead.

Deep Clean Your Carpets

How often do you deep clean your carpeting? Most people vacuum at least once or twice every week, so spring cleaning is a perfect time to thoroughly clean the carpets in your home. Doing so will help improve air quality and reduce airborne particulates. If you do not own a professional carpet cleaner, rent one and use the appropriate shampoo for your type of carpet.

Dust and Clean the Tops of Your Cabinets

If you’re like most homeowners, you rarely see the top of your cabinets or other elevated surfaces around your home, like the tops of bookshelves, door trim, and crown molding.

First, use a step stool and clean microfiber cloth to remove dust from the surface. Next, use a general-purpose household cleaning spray and another clean cloth to remove stains, spills, and lingering grime.

Sanitize Your Garbage Cans

Your garbage cans are used daily throughout the year. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to empty and sanitize them thoroughly.

Plan to tackle this project on trash day after pickup when the cans are empty. Using a mixture of distilled white vinegar, dishwashing liquid, and water, allow them to soak for at least a few hours before rinsing them out. Make sure they are spotless and dry before replacing the trash bag.

Clean Under and Around Appliances

Most homeowners leave their major appliances in place during spring cleaning, as it is cumbersome to move them away from the wall or unhook them. However, these appliances often shelter small crumbs, food debris, and dust and are an appealing hiding spot for pests.

During your spring cleaning, take time to remove your washing machine, stove, dryer, refrigerator, and other large appliances to clean behind and around them.
